xxshrapnailxx, you made the comparison & invited critique with this post to bp222, "my gods, still reverting to comments like that in this day and age?" & then citing ancient history involving whites to be somehow relevant to erasing 144 years of institutional racism. "My answer was not based on opinion, it was based on historical fact." there is no 'historical fact' in the WAY that you cited certain events. whites were enslaved in Rome.. which does NOT rationalize jim crow laws in the U.S.

You asked "when", And i answered so if you want to argue juat to argue, then find someone else to foolishly argue with. You asked I answered My answer was not based on opinion, it was based on historical fact. Again, you asked "when", not "when in this century".

Slavery as practiced in ancient Rome and medieval England does NOT blunt the intrinsic evil nor legitimize the inherent racism of slavery in the colonial and antebellum periods of America history. Nor does it erase erase the institutionalized racism that followed and took more than 100 years to dismantle. Slavery is always bad, racism is always bad.

xxshrapnailxx, you're comparing apples to oranges. the examples you cite are either ancient history or the result of an medieval penal system. the other person referred to RECENT legalized policy declaring a certain race to be less-than human. That policy's legacy was more than 100 years of systematic race-based discrimination, disenfranchisement and violence in the MODERN world. The shallowness and childishness of such a comparison is shockingly archaic and insensitive.

The British government had realized as early as the 1640s how beneficial white slave labor was to the profiting colonial plantations. Slavery was instituted as early as 1627 in the British West Indies. The Calendar of State Papers, Colonial Series of 1701 records 25000 slaves in Barbados in which 21700 were white slaves.

The judges of Edinburgh Scotland during the years 1662-1665 ordered the enslavement and shipment to the colonies a large number of rogues and white men others who made life unpleasant for the British upper class. Slavery was what the Scots have survived for a thousand years. Scots are generally whites, are they not? The early ancestors of the Scots, Alba and Pics were enslaved as early as the first century BC.
